Level Lab
A downloadable tool for Windows, macOS, and Linux
Level Lab is a level editor small enough to learn in an afternoon.
Paint tiles in the middle of the window. Everything else — tools, art, data — sits on either side, always visible, no menu-diving. Press Play and you're inside the level you just drew: walking around a top-down map, or running and jumping through a side-scroller with real gravity. Find the jump that doesn't quite clear, fix it, press Play again. That loop is the whole product.
When the level's right, export the JSON your game reads. Clean, documented, no proprietary format holding your work hostage.
**Two kinds of level, one editor**
- **Top-down** — walls, floors, doors, gates, breakables, hazards, ramps, spawn and exit markers, plus a first-person walkthrough so you can feel the corridors before you build them.
- **Side-scroller** — blocks, slopes, one-way platforms, ladders, water, springs, moving platforms, checkpoints and coins. Play mode brings gravity, run and jump, ladder climbing, swimming and platform-riding.
**Your art, straight away**
Drop in PNGs and they're tiles. Sprite sheets slice themselves into frames. Group textures into themes and paint a theme across a region — corridors get a different look from caves without you touching a single tile twice. Parallax layers scroll behind side-scrolling levels.
**Built to stop you shipping broken levels**
Live validation watches for the mistakes that waste an evening: no spawn, unreachable exit, an objective sealed behind a locked door, enemy density that makes a room unplayable. Engine export refuses to run while errors stand.
**Honest software**
- One payment. Yours forever. No subscription, no account, no login.
- Talks to the internet exactly once, to activate. Then never again.
- No telemetry, no analytics. Your levels never leave your computer.
- Everything you make is yours outright — commercial use, no royalty, no credit required.
**Try it first**
The browser edition is a free download and runs on anything with a browser — no install, no permissions. Same editor. Buy when you want engine exports and more than three saved levels.
### What's in the trial
30 days · 3 saved levels · project files export with a trial stamp · engine export is for licence holders. Nothing you make during the trial is deleted or locked when it ends — the app stays fully editable, and your files stay yours.
---
### System requirements
Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. About 6 MB installed. No .NET, no runtime, no Visual C++ redistributable. The browser edition runs anywhere with a modern browser, including macOS and Linux.
---
### A note on the Windows warning
The installer isn't code-signed yet — a certificate costs more per year than this tool costs you once. Windows will show a blue "Windows protected your PC" panel on first run: click **More info**, then **Run anyway**. If you'd rather not, download the browser edition instead; it's the same editor.
